Bulgarian painter Zlatyu and village life in the region of Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second largest city. Kiko drew on the painter’s agrarian scenes and rustic textures to inform the collection’s mood and visuals. The show also explored the intersection of Ottoman military structure, especially Janissary uniforms, with Boyadzhiev’s rural palette and forms, creating a dialogue between structured draping and organic village life. Trims, patches, and some hardware in the collection referenced Danh Võ’s use of copper sheeting, particularly his disassembled fragments of the Statue of Liberty and works where he cuts historical materials into abstracted, repeating geometric shapes.
